JONES PITTAWAY SMITHSON FAMILY TREE

Pittaway Branch

Well the Pittaway part of my family is the hidden part,
so I thought I would start searching at the base of the tree…
The name Pittaway has some history. I've put here what I found
with a few links to show my gratitude to the sites
on which I discovered some of the information…
Thanks to all…

Meaning of surname Pittaway

This is a paragragh taken from "Quarries & Craftsmen of The Windrush Valley" by Joanna Turner

"The full history of Taynton Stone will never be known. The quarries cover at least 100 acres, as the green humps and hollows testify. Dense woods, now obscure, some of the workings, and the hundreds of anonymous men who toiled there, no doubt lie buried not very far away. The characteristic stone can be recognised in most of the churches within 20miles of Taynton and in Wren's churches in London. We know the names of some of the families who owned quarries - Leper, Strong, Pittaway, Wingfield and Lee. A "pittaway" is a stone-slat pick, and it would be interesting to know when it was first used as a surname for the family. Seven generations of Pittaways were cutters at Taynton. The last Burford resident of that name died only a few years ago, but seven people of the name are listed in the Oxfordshire telephone book and twenty-three in the Gloucestershire one."

Or at least I hope so.

Thank you for the information. Untill a few days ago I was plodding along doing my family history......Then came the Pittaway's....The Taynton one's.
Suffering from bereavement, I had nothing better to do than to try to off-set the pain by getting out for the day, and as the planned day of the visit to the Oxford history center was out (due to it being closed on Monday's) I decided to ditch the Oxford census and jump the gun by going straight to Taynton to follow up the marriage certificate of my great great grandmother and the whisperings and murmerings of the family tree research.....
My first sight of Taynton was through tear bleary eyes (convenient as I was in the car and the usual English drizzle had blurred the windscreen) I came accross the sign "Taynton" before I was ready, and made a sharp turn right....There, below, lay the quintessential English pastoral landscape. It quite woke me out of my melancholy, and I stopped the car, awed at the landscape that my forebears had chosen as "home". Enough..
The church is magnificent. The graveyard is littered with the the bones of Pittaway's, Hunts, and the longer stayers of the Taynton village...
The next day, I took my mother, not informing her of the trip I had taken the day before.
To tell my mother the story of her ancestry, in a place like Taynton, wrapped in the comfort of the church that her forefathers had built, christened, married, died, celebrated and mourned in.... to pick out the houses with her where the boys wooed girls, where the children were born the bread was baked and where the old faded away...All this for generation after generation after generation...
More... On the second trip I discovered professional "Grafitti" in the church... The sign of "The Templars".
The Pittaway's were stone masons. I have been to the sight in France where a mystery still prevails...It has followed me for 15 years. Here, in Taynton, it deepens?
If you are a Pittaway, I suggest you look further into the marriages and history of that line... Who knows what you may uncover.
My grateful thanks go to Betty Portsmith for giving us a paragragh taken from "Quarries & Craftsmen of The Windrush Valley" by Joanna Turner, and the consequential enlightenment on the subject.
Appologies, but it is an extremely good bottle of "Italian Chiati"!
